The Stockholm International Film Festival

Sweden is famous for its superb standard of living, idyllic, natural panoramas and a rich history of music and artistic endeavours, with something for all generations from ABBA to Avicii. This November there will be yet another reason why you should opt for an autumnal vacation in Sweden: the annual International Film festival, held in Stockholm.

This year, the legendary Francis Ford Coppola will visit the festival, making him the most recent of a plethora of filmmakers and actors that have attended the festival, including Dennis Hopper, Lauren Bacall, Ang Lee, and Uma Thurman. The film voted by a jury as the best in the competition receives the Bronze Horse (Bronshästen).

Keeping to its primary aim – that of bringing forth and supporting new talent – the competition only allows budding directors to participate. A third of the films selected for the festival are made by a debuting director and only directors who have made less than 3 films are selected for the competition.

The goal for the Stockholm International Film Festival is to broaden the selection of films in Sweden with creative new films of high quality, offer the visitor an orientation within modern film, and to show quality film from every corner of the world – films that would otherwise not reach the mainstream film repertoire. With seminars and a multitude of opportunities to meet both actors and filmmakers during the festival, the film experience comes full circle. All screenings are free of charge for everyone between 6 and 19 years old.

For those who want to make an extended vacation out of this, we suggest a journey by rail (or car) to the north of Sweden that is bound to provide jaw-dropping scenic views. Thousands opt for the famed Arctic Circle train that leaves from Stockholm and crosses over to its sister countries – Norway and Finland. Enjoy snow-capped mountains rising from the sea, enclosed bays, dense forests, wide rushing river as you sojourn in the land of the midnight sun.
