Stress-free summer nights at Madliena Lodge

Madliena Lodge Terrace Entrance

I had heard some great reviews about the newly refurbished Madliena Lodge from friends but I have to admit, I still had ideas of a venue stuck in the 80s. So I can’t tell you how pleasantly surprised I was when I drove into the graveled car park and first caught site of the crisp white wooden gates, leading onto a really pretty terrace. I was there to sample their dynamic new summer menu that has been crafted to make the most of the freshest flavours and best seasonal produce.

Madliena Lodge was taken over in 2015. The new team chose to completely transform this historic lodge by introducing a contemporary new style and working with a highly professional team to present an elevated-yet-informal dining experience to their guests.

On a tour of the whole restaurant I could really appreciate the love and care that has gone into this renovation. Madliena Lodge is actually split into two distinct concepts. The lounge bar is a laid back space serving drinks and bar food such as Panko-Fried Camembert Bites, Madliena’s Slow Cooked Single Ribs and the Gourmet Homemade Burger, accompanied by a vast range of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails. It is the perfect space for a chilled night out with friends. I can imagine it would be lovely and cosy in the winter time. When I visited, however, the live music and rattan sofas out on the terrace gave it a distinctly summer vibe.

The restaurant, which also spills out onto the terrace, is very tastefully done, with exposed stone walls and a lovely Maltese tiled floor in the courtyard area.  I especially love the fact that the restaurant tables are deliberately larger than usual, to allow diners the comfort of more space. The team has worked hard on the new summer menu, which excellently reflects their dedication to innovative cuisine and high-quality ingredients. I couldn’t believe my luck to find some of my absolute favourite dishes presented to me on my visit. My highlights were definitely the Parmesan Panna Cotta, grilled loin of tuna, Veal Milanese and squid with artichokes.

Madliena Lodge Menu

“Everything about Madliena Lodge today has been crafted for pleasure, and we really do hope our guests experience that. We hope our guests wonder whether they are actually at home or at the Lodge! Our goal is to make them feel completely at ease during their time with us,” says Duncan Barbaro Sant, one of the directors. Executed by Duncan and his family, the homely, relaxed feeling is very evident. I had a wonderful evening and felt very much at home. I will definitely be back for another visit soon.
